Transforming Museum Storage with Purpose at UNM Hibben Center

The UNM Hibben Center, a cornerstone of cultural preservation and museum collection management, embarked on a long-term journey to upgrade their artifact storage capacity. This multi-year project aimed to create a state-of-the-art environment that safeguards invaluable collections while optimizing space. The collaboration between UNM and Interior Solutions exemplifies a purposeful approach to enhancing museum operations through tailored storage solutions.

The Challenge

Before the project, the museum's Native American pottery collection was housed on static shelving that limited access and space efficiency. The museum’s goal was to modernize their storage environment to better protect and organize their growing collection, all while minimizing disruption to ongoing operations. The leadership team expressed a need to improve storage capacity without compromising artifact safety and accessibility, which was critical for their future expansion plans.

The Collaboration

Interior Solutions approached this challenge with a detailed plan that prioritized careful coordination and personalized solutions. Beginning with the removal of the existing shelving, we worked closely with the client to design a custom mobile rail system that maximized storage capacity. “We appreciated how the team listened to our needs and seamlessly coordinated each phase,” said the museum’s project manager. We also coordinated the back portion of the concrete slab—ensuring a flawless integration of the new mobile carriages with the existing infrastructure. Throughout the project, precise communication and flexibility were key, allowing us to adapt as needed and minimize disruptions.

The Results

The final outcome is a cutting-edge storage environment that significantly enhances artifact preservation and accessibility. The new mobile rail system and customized shelving maximize space, allowing the museum to expand their collection without additional footprint. “This new storage system transforms how we access and protect our artifacts,” said the museum director. The space now supports both current needs and future growth, ensuring the collection is preserved under optimal conditions for generations to come.

The Learnings

This project reinforced the importance of meticulous planning and collaboration in achieving complex, phased renovations. The client learned that investing in tailored storage solutions and expert project management not only saves time and costs but also profoundly impacts museum operations and the preservation of cultural heritage.

Advice to Others

The UNM team recommends starting with a clear vision and partnering with experts early in the process. “Don’t shy away from customizing your space—it makes all the difference in meaningful preservation and efficient storage,” advised the museum’s curator.
